A rectangular or square cut with trimmed corners, combining the brilliance of the round cut with the architectural silhouette of the emerald cut.
Invented in 1977 by Henry Grossbard, blending the round brilliant's facet pattern with the emerald cut's rectangular outline.
About 70 facets producing intense brilliance and sparkle, the opposite of the emerald cut's quieter "mirror" effect. The trimmed corners also make it more resistant to chipping.
Those who want a bright, sparkling rectangular stone, without the emerald cut's more exposed "window" effect on inclusions. It's also a cut widely used for Fancy Color diamonds (yellow, in particular), as it concentrates colour well.
Thanks to its high facet count, the radiant cut is more forgiving of slightly lower colour or clarity than a round brilliant or an emerald cut, a good way to get a visually larger, sparklier stone for a given budget.
