Which piece of jewellery to give for a birth?

Ring, bracelet or pendant: the question comes up with every birth. Here's what really matters to choose well.

Ring, bracelet or pendant: which to choose?

It's the question almost every new dad asks. Here's what you really need to know before choosing.

The pendant, the safest choice, and often the most symbolic. A single stone on a fine chain naturally evokes the child who has just arrived. Discreet, it can be worn from morning to night without ever getting in the way.

The bracelet, a classic, especially beautiful when fine and worn on its own. Be careful though if you'll often be carrying the baby in the first weeks: a bracelet that's too busy or has charms can catch.

The ring, trickier to choose right after giving birth: fingers swell during pregnancy and only return to their usual size after a few weeks. It's often better to wait a little before ordering a ring in the right size, or to give a voucher rather than the ring itself.

The right instinct

A fine, discreet piece remains the safest choice, whatever the type. Avoid bulky or fragile pieces, which get in the way day to day when you're carrying a newborn. Thanks to its hardness, a diamond has the advantage of never wearing down or scratching, even when worn every day for years.

A tradition from abroad, increasingly popular in France

Across the Atlantic this gift has a name: the "push present", a piece of jewellery given by the father to thank the mother for the pregnancy and the birth. The tradition, widespread in the United States and the United Kingdom, is gradually reaching France.

Personalising the piece

A birthstone (a different gem for each month of birth), an engraving of the child's name or date of birth: simple ways to turn a beautiful piece into an object that tells a precise story, the story of that particular birth.

Finding the right piece for this occasion

Every birth is different, and the right piece depends as much on the budget as on the mother's style. I can guide you towards the most suitable choice.

Frequently asked questions

Ring, bracelet or pendant for a birth?
The pendant and the bracelet are the most practical choices right after the birth. A ring often means waiting until fingers return to their usual size.

What is a "push present"?
A piece of jewellery given by the father to the mother to thank her for the pregnancy and the birth, a tradition from the United States and the United Kingdom that is increasingly common in France.

Should the piece be personalised?
It isn't compulsory, but engraving the name or date of birth, or adding a birthstone, makes the piece unique to that specific event.

What jewellery to give a newborn?
For the baby, rings, necklaces and bracelets are best avoided in the first years, for safety reasons. Instead, people give the mother a piece that marks the birth, or a pendant or medal that the child will wear later.
