Natural diamond or lab-grown diamond?

1. The same stone, two origins

A natural diamond formed deep below the earth's crust over hundreds of millions of years, before being carried to the surface by ancient volcanic eruptions. A lab-grown diamond is manufactured industrially within weeks, using HPHT (high pressure, high temperature) or CVD (chemical vapour deposition) processes. Chemically, optically and physically, both are identical: pure crystallised carbon.

2. Can you tell them apart?

Not with the naked eye, not even with a loupe. Only specialised detection equipment, used by laboratories such as GIA, can reliably identify a stone's origin. That's why a certificate is essential, whichever type of diamond you choose.

3. A completely different pricing logic

Natural diamonds follow a logic of geological scarcity. Lab-grown diamonds follow a logic of industrial production cost, and that cost falls every year as manufacturing capacity grows, particularly in China and India. The result: the price gap is now structural, typically 70 to 90% depending on weight and quality.

4. What the certificate says

A serious certificate (GIA or HRD) always clearly states the stone's origin, with a dedicated laser inscription on the girdle for lab-grown diamonds. Since 2025, GIA has gone further: lab-grown diamonds no longer receive a traditional colour/clarity grade, but a descriptive "Premium" or "Standard" category, a way of marking the distinction from the scale reserved for natural diamonds.

5. What about resale?

This is where the gap is widest. A certified natural diamond typically retains 25 to 50% of its retail value after several years. A lab-grown diamond, being neither geologically rare nor immune to continuously falling production costs, typically retains only 10 to 30%, sometimes less. If value retention matters to you, this is a decisive factor.

6. So, which to choose?

There's no wrong answer, only different priorities. A natural diamond suits those who value rarity, geological history and heirloom potential. A lab-grown diamond suits those who want to maximise size and brilliance for a given budget, with no intention to resell.
