The history of the craft I practise traces back to 15th-century Antwerp, with Lodewyk van Bercken, the legendary craftsman who invented the scaif, a polishing wheel impregnated with diamond dust, making perfect symmetry on every facet possible for the first time.
It was after the Second World War that Antwerp truly became the world's diamond capital. The return of diamond dealers, the creation of the Diamond Office in 1945 and the reopening of the Antwerpsche Diamantkring in 1946 made Antwerp the epicentre of world trade: at its peak, over 80% of the world's rough diamonds passed through it. It was in this unique ecosystem that my grandfather, and later my family, practised this craft.
